 General Diseases 
Tobacco smoking causes lung cancer - about 90% of all lung cancers. A large proportion of cancers in the mouth, throat, oesophagus, bladder and pancreas are also caused by smoking. 30% of all cases of ischaemic heart disease and strokes, about 80% of myocardial infarctions before the age of 50 years and 70% of chronic lung diseases are caused by smoking.

Passive smoking can cause lung cancer and ischaemic heart disease. Smoking during pregnancy may affect the foetus aa well as during the first years of life.
